A Clinical Study of Pyothorax in the Pediatric Field

Abstract
|
|
|
A clinical study was done in 19 cares of pyottorax in children under the age 1.5 years which were admitted to Department of Pediatrics, Chungnam National University college of Medicine during the period of 4 year from Jan. 1981 to Nov. 1984.
The results were obtained as follows.
1. 63.2% of total cases was seen under the age of 3 years. :The male to female ratio was 11.5. 42.1% of total cases has occurred during the sping season
2. The chief complaints were dyspnea(47.4%), high fever(26.4%) & cough(15.8%) in order. The right lung is more frequently involved than the left(3.5:1)
3. Causative organisms were cultured from 42.1% of the total cases. The most common organism was staphylococcus aureus, cultured from 7 case(87.5%).Streptococcus pneumoniae found 1 case(12.5%)
4. 36.8% of cases needed 2-3 weeks for management and 31.6% of cases needed oyer 4 weeks.
5. The combined treatment with antibiotics 3 closed thoracotomy was 57.8%. Antibiotics &thoracentesis was 21.1%. 21.1% was treated with only antibiotics.
